Smart Sensor for Blood Leakage Detection in Hemodialysis

Du Yi-chun, Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology
Year 2017Year Period:2017-01-01 to 2017-06-30

Overview

  • Accidental needle dislodgement is not uncommon over the course of hemodialysis. The complications and disputes thus incurred often make a heavy burden on hospitals.
  • The team has thus developed this smart sensor for detecting blood leakage during hemodialysis by drawing on its core competence in flexible substrate, matrix detection, and smart conductive gauze technologies.
  • Offer an effective preventive tool to alleviate medical personnel shortages by helping them detect blood leakage in time and avoid unnecessary contagious infection.

Development Process

Over the course of this project under the Applied Research Incubation Program, the team completed documentation in accordance with applicable medical devices regulations, including cytotoxicity test, intracutaneous irritation test, and tests for IEC 60601-1, IEC 60601-1-2, and ISO 11137 compliance, as well as a 500-person clinical trial. After AcuSense Biomedical Technology Corp. was established on February 2, 2017, the team continued to offer assistance in product commercialization.
